from the Italian word infante (from Latin infans, “infant, child”) originally meant “child,” later “youth, boy,” and then “servant.” In the 14th century, infante also took on the sense “foot soldier.”
infantry源自意大利语 infante（源于拉丁语infans），意思是新手。在中世纪的欧洲，军队主要有骑兵（cavalry）和步兵这两个兵种。骑兵要求较高，士兵必须经过严格和专业训练，掌握相应经验和技能后才能进入骑兵队伍。而步兵门槛相对来说就低了很多，从老百姓中招募后经过简单训练的新兵就可以直接成为步兵，所以就用infante新手这个词用来指步兵，后来演变为英语就变成了infantry。

infantry和单词infant（婴儿）拼写很相似，因为它们都来自拉丁语infans。infans由in（不）+fans（说话）组成，意思是不能说话。infant的意思就是还不会说话的婴儿。
