不知是否有很多人在研究“倒数第二”用英语怎么表达？首先可以确定的是“倒数第一”用英语表达可以是 last，因为倒数第一名就是最后一名的意思，那么倒数第二用英语可以是 next to last，因为最后一名的邻居只能是倒数第二了。
当然还有其他表示倒数第二的表达方式，其中涉及序数词 first 和 second 的区别，那么 first to last 和 second to last 到底哪个是倒数第一呢？事实是 second to last 是倒数第二的意思，但是有的人在位置上还不能很好地区分它们。
其实这个很好理解，举个例子，比赛得第一名是 come first，得第二名是 come second，那么第二名就是 second，而不会是 first，此时参照的是第一名的位置，这个在理解上没有任何问题。
那么同理，比赛得最后一名是 come last，那么得倒数第二名就是 come second last，也就是 second to last，此时参照的是最后一名的位置；其实在空间上 first 和 last 是排名里的两端，一个是从左到右，一个是从右到左，无论从哪端开始，second 不是在 first 的后面，就是在 last 的前面。
当然如果理解上还是有困难的话，那么天无绝人之路，我们还可以使用 last but one 来表示倒数第二，它的原理是：last but 后面的数字是多少，那么就表示 last 的前几个，如 one 就是 last 的前一个，那就是倒数第二，two 就是 last 的前两个，那就是倒数第三了，以此类推，例如：
It's the last but one day in the athletics programme.
这是田径项目结束的前一天。
The British team finished last but two.
英国队以倒数第三名结束比赛。
因此 second to last 是倒数第二的意思，它跟 next to last 意思一样，而 first to last 不是倒数第一的意思，例如：
Tomorrow they will play their second to last game of the season.
明天他们将进行本赛季倒数第二场比赛。
Baker finished next to last in the 1500 metres race.
贝克在1500米赛跑中名列倒数第二。
现在回头来看 second to none 的话，就不会显得那么陌生了；none 表示不存在的（nonexistent），那么 second to none 就是没人在前面或没有更好的存在，相当于 there is nothing to which it is second，那就是不比任何东西差的意思，可以意为“首屈一指，不比任何事物差”等，例如：
The city's public transportation system is second to none.
这个城市的公共交通系统是首屈一指的。
In the output of grain, China is second to none.
在粮食产量上，中国首屈一指。
但是有的时候有人有不同的理解，他们认为 second to none 相当于 worse than nothing，但其实 none 本身的意思否定了这个表达式，因为 none 是不存在的，也即没边的，它相当于 not any，那么 second to none 相当于 not second to any，它就不具备 worse 的说法了。
